Motion and Visual Analysis: Auto-Trim Silent Footage

Not every clip has speech. B-roll footage, landscape shots, and action sequences are often silent — but you still want the most visually compelling portion. Smart Trimmer analyzes your clip's visual content and automatically selects the best segment based on motion, visual changes, and scene dynamics.

How It Works

Smart Trimmer uses smart analysis to evaluate every part of your clip and identify the segment with the highest visual interest. It looks at:

  • Motion intensity — segments with natural movement score higher than static frames
  • Visual changes — areas with varied content are preferred over repetitive or uniform sections
  • Scene transitions — abrupt scene cuts are avoided as trim boundaries

The result is a 5-second segment that captures the most engaging part of your footage.

When Smart Trimmer Activates

Smart Trimmer runs automatically in two scenarios:

  • Smart Add with AI — when you add clips using Smart Add with AI, clips without detected speech are routed through Smart Trimmer instead of the transcription pipeline.
  • Manual trigger — select a clip on the timeline and use the Smart Trim option from the clip toolbar.
Default duration: Smart Trimmer selects a 5-second segment by default. After trimming, you can manually adjust the clip edges to extend or shorten it further. See Trimming Clips.

After Smart Trimming

Once Smart Trimmer picks the best segment, the clip is trimmed on the timeline and ready for playback. The original video remains untouched — you can always drag the clip edges to show different portions. If the automatically selected segment isn't what you wanted, just trim manually to adjust.

Works best with varied footage: Smart Trimmer delivers the best results on clips with a mix of movement and stillness. For clips that are uniformly static (like a still photo), any segment is equally valid.
